Local Foods

What grows within 100 miles of San Francisco?

Take a look at the following list to get an idea of our local crops.

Please keep in mind that some foods do grow locally but are not available year-round: local foods are inherently seasonal as well. If you look for blueberries, asparagus, pears, or pumpkins that have been grown within 100 miles of San Francisco in August you will be disappointed: it is too late for blueberries and asparagus; too early for pears and pumpkins. But don't despair--August is the height of the Bay Area food season and you will find food galore!

Also, there are some foods that can be grown locally that either are not being grown on a large commercial scale, or are hard to find. The best approach to eating locally is to go to the farmers market and see what's there. Then plan your meal around what you find there!

You will also find a list of foods that are not being grown locally. This is usually because our climate is not right for them.

There are some foods that we're just not sure about. If you have a lead on those, let us know!

Happy Foraging!
